The December 2018 editions of the World Fab Forecast, World Fab Watch, Opto/LED Fab Watch, and the Opto/LED Fab Forecast databases have been published and are available now.  The following highlights are from our World Fab Forecast database:

Key Points:

Fab Equipment Spending

  • Equipment spending (new and used) for 2018 is expected to increase by 10% for a record high of US$61 Billion, down from the forecast issued in August 2018
  • Equipment spending (new and used) for 2019 is expected to decrease by 8%. This is an adjustment down from the +8% published in August 2018

Installed Capacity

  • 3D NAND will have the most capacity added in both 2018 and 2019 with 41% growth in 2018 and 25% growth in 2019
  • Foundry capacity growth is steady at 3% in 2018 and 6% in 2019
  • 200mm fab capacity will increase 3% in 2018 and another 4% in 2019

New Facilities / Construction Spending

  • In 2018 there are 78 construction projects (up from 72 in the August report) with investments totaling US$16 Billion, a year-over-year increase of 32%
  • Construction spending will reach all-time highs with China continuing its lead at US$7 Billion in 2018 shattering the previous record set by Korea at US$3 billion
  • Fab construction spending in China is expected to exceed US$4 Billion in 2019 but Korea is expected to spend over US$5 billion next year (down from the ~$6 billion projected in August 2018)
  • Most construction spending in 2018 will be for Memory (just over US$9 Billion), primarily for 3D NAND followed by DRAM. Second in construction spending is Foundry (just under US$5 Billion)

Activity Report

Since the last report published August 31, 2018:

  • We made 266 changes on 249 fabs/lines including the addition of 32 new records and the deletion of 9 records
  • We are tracking 115 future facilities/lines with various probabilities that will start volume production in 2018 or later
  • The report has 1,288 records including about 300 Opto & LED related facilities.
