Key Points:

Fab Equipment Spending

  • Equipment spending (new and used) for 2019 is expected to decrease by 14% US$53 Billion, down from the forecast issued in December 2018
  • Equipment spending (new and used) for 2020 is expected to increase by 27%.

Installed Capacity

  • 3D NAND will have the most capacity added in both 2019 and 2020 with 18% growth in 2019 and 24% growth in 2020
  • Foundry capacity growth is steady at 4% in 2019 and 6% in 2020
  • 200mm fab capacity will increase 4% in 2019 and another 4% in 2020

New Facilities / Construction Spending

  • In 2019 there are 66 construction projects totaling US$15 Billion, a year-over-year decrease of 3%
  • Fab construction spending in China is expected to exceed US$4 Billion in 2019 but decline in 2020. Construction spending in Korea in 2019 and 2020 is expected to exceed US$4 Billion, each year.
  • Most construction spending in 2019 will be for Memory (just under US$9 Billion), primarily for 3D NAND followed by DRAM. Second in construction spending is Foundry (US$4 Billion)

Activity Report

Since the last report published December 4, 2018:

  • We extended the forecast period forward by one year; the report now covers Jan 2018 to Dec 2020
  • We made 209 changes on 199 fabs/lines including the addition of 22 new records and the deletion of 4 records
  • We are tracking 99 future facilities/lines with various probabilities that will start volume production in 2018 or later
  • The report has 1,304 records including about 300 Opto & LED related facilities.
